bad breathEverybody has bad breath once in a while, especially in the morning, after smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages, after eating strong-scented foods like garlic and onions, and so on. Questions About Bad Breath

What exactly is bad breath?

Bad breath is caused by bacteria in your mouth, on your tongue, and under your gums. There are also leftover bits of food in your mouth, stuck between your teeth, and deep down within your tongue (your tongue is like a carpet) that the bacteria feed on and break down. In the process a putrid smell is released that we call bad breath.

Can bad breath be caused by something other than your mouth?

In most cases, bad breath originates in your mouth. However, there are times it can come from your nose or tonsils, for instance, due to a sinus infection, or tonsillitis, respectively.

How do you get rid of bad breath?

Most of the time you can just brush, floss, and gargle and your temporary bad breath will be gone. However, if you are having chronic bad breath, a visit to your dentist is in order. You may need a professional cleaning, treatment for decay, or a deep cleaning if you are suffering with periodontal disease.

Persistent bad breath, or halitosis, affect millions of people. It is estimated that 25 to 50 percent of adults, middle-aged and older, are affected by it. If you are suffering from persistent bad breath, don’t let embarrassment keep you from seeking treatment.
