root canal can rescue your toothWhen you take your oral health seriously by checking in with your dentist and brushing and flossing regularly, you can avoid needing major dental procedures. But health issues happen to even the most vigilant of us. Root canal therapy can save a tooth that has had a cavity go far or a tooth that has a major infection. A root canal can also be used to save a tooth that has been severely damaged by chip or crack. A root canal can prevent infection or decay from spreading to the other teeth. It can prevent tooth in need of care from needing to be extracted. A root canal is only necessary when the damage, decay, or infection has reached the pulp of the tooth.

What is a root canal?

First you will receive local anesthesia around the tooth that will be treated. If you are nervous or in need of more sedation, it can be provided. the tooth and the tooth’s canals containing the roots will be fully cleaned out. Your dentist will remove all bacteria. Any infected dental pulp or damaged tooth will also be removed. Once the tooth is clear of harm and completely clean, the canals will be filled with a rubber compound. A tooth-shaped dental crown will be placed over the remainder of your tooth to add protection.

Why is it necessary?

When your tooth reaches the need for a root canal, whether from an untreated cavity, damage from an accident, a severe infection, or something else, the tooth is in danger.  Infection, left untreated, can affect other teeth, the gums, and even other parts of the body. If a root canal is not performed on an endangered tooth, it will likely reach the point of needing an extraction to prevent spread to the other teeth.
